Campus Supervised Internship

Over the course of the 18-month program from Lamar University for Educational Leadership and Technology, I participated in a number of activities that would allow me to gain experience in the Domains and Competencies.  These Domains and Competencies describe the expectations and responsibilities of campus leadership.  I was able to complete this internship with 444 hours of activities toward the 150 expected hours.  I feel that I was able to complete a well-rounded internship.  I would like to obtain more experience in the areas that deal with applying case law.

iStation
Compass Learning was a district initiative software program. All teachers were trained on the use and implementation of this software program to be used for student interventions.  This program was the basis for my Action Research Project.
Completing additional training allowed me to function as a teacher of teachers.  I implemented the program in my classroom and assisted other teachers in setting up their classrooms to utilize the program.
By implementing the program, I was able to lead by example and fulfilled the districts expectations for software use.

Eduphoria is testing database and mining software.  Eduphoria allows teachers to be data-driven in instructional strategies.

Think Through Math and iStation are tutorial programs that are prescriptive to student levels.  Think Through Math is a State of Texas initiative and iStation is provided by the District for student assistance.

Review lab materials available for teachers in the science lab. Order new materials as needed.
Re-open science labs and computer labs.
Place technology workorders.
Order data and phone drops.
I was responsible for maintaining the science stock room; this included check out and collection of materials.
Materials from the campus are campus property and must be returned to the science lab after completion of use in the classroom; it was my responsibility to ensure that all materials were accounted for.
Lab materials need to be accounted for by the science department.  Materials are not dangerous, but need to be secured in the lab at the end of the school year.
I also maintained the technology equipment available for educator use.  I created a database to track check-out and check-in.  I also assist the campus secretary in ordering computers and peripherals for the campus computer labs.

SIT Committee
By being a part of the School Improvement Team (SIT), I was able to understand the focus of the campus.  There were several people that composed the SIT committee, but the primary focus was on maintaining the campus vision and interacting with stakeholders such as students, parents and the community.
As part of the SIT Committee, I became more familiar with what funds are available for each purpose.  Title I is a sensitive issue, and student privacy is extremely important as well.  Part of the role of SIT is to ensure that State and Federal Laws are addressed.
In reviewing and creating the new Campus Action Plan (CAP) for 2014-2015, attention was paid to areas of expenditure.  The CAP had to be created carefully because if an item is not in the CAP, then money cannot be spent on that item.

Interview Committee -   Assist in interviews of campus leadership and additional educators for the SISD system.
Also hiring additional crossing guards for campus.
To be part of the Interview committee, I needed to know what skills were required of the position.  I also had to be knowledgeable about the campus and the campus needs.
In hiring for an assistant principal, I needed to be familiar with the duties, policies and procedures that would be required of the candidate.  I also needed to be aware of the needs of the campus and personnel; we were looking for a good fit for both campus and candidate.
In the search for the new school crossing guard, I needed to be familiar with security issues on campus.  Again the needs of the campus and students was the driving factor in deciding the best person for the job.

I communicate with parents, teachers, and student regarding timelines and expectations for science fair. Rules and guidelines are implemented and followed.  I work with students to make sure that they are fulfilling expectations.

Attendance Committee -  Review and make recommendations based on student and teacher absences.
Data was collected about student attendance.  Student attendance was monitored and parents were contacted.  Parents were reminded about the state requirements for attendance and were offered assistance if needed.

Student attendance is very important, and the district has an initiative to improve student attendance.  By contacting parents, students are encouraged to attend school.   Classroom instruction is vital and student attendance is key.

Students must attend school to be promoted.  Students must not miss more than 18 days of school or they are in jeopardy of losing credit.  By understanding the policies, I am able to share that information with students and parents.

Student Tutorial Computer Lab
Student Tutorial Computer Lab was established as an after school.  Students were given the opportunity to use computers and internet services to access a tutorial program for math.  In creating this tutorial session, I supervised two leadership interns.  I created the test bank that students took as pre-assessments to access a prescriptive tutoring program.  Students were monitored throughout the program and were redirected as needed.  After participation in the program, a detailed review was made of student progress and the impact on success on the STAAR 2013.

As a State Comp Ed Instructional Coach, I have been responsible for training teachers on the newly installed Student Information System – Tyler Munis.  I have worked with teachers to ensure that they are able to access gradebooks, attendance records and student records.  This program has been very different from past programs and in working with teachers, I ensured that they were comfortable with the program and would be able to progress through the change.  I also worked with teachers in detail with Eduphoria, which is a testing and data-mining software.  The intention of the district is data-driven instruction and an understanding of how to access and utilize the data provided by Eduphoria through student testing was extremely important.
